Your question may be “grace is greater than what?” What God’s grace does for you is far greater than anything you can do for yourself, or what any person will ever do for you. Paul wrote to Titus who was leading a church in Crete. He wanted to emphasize how God’s grace is so much greater than any man’s sin.

SCRIPTURE

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “no” to ungodliness, and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope - the glorious appearance of our great God, and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us all from all wickedness, and to purify himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.” Titus 2:11-14

SPOTLIGHT

The title of today’s devotional is “GRACE IS GREATER!” Your question may be “grace is greater than what?”

John Milton, who authored Paradise Lost, hailed a man named John Selden as, “the chief of learned men” in England during the late 1600’s. Selden had 8,000 books in his library. On his death bed, he said, “I have surveyed most of the learning that is among the sons of men, and my study is filled with books and manuscripts on various subjects. But at present, I cannot recollect any passage out of all my books and papers whereon I can rest my soul, save this from the sacred Scriptures…” The dying man proceeded to quote our Scripture passage for today found in Titus 2:11-14.

What God’s grace does for you is far greater than anything you can do for yourself, or what any person will ever do for you. Paul wrote to Titus who was leading a church in Crete. He wanted to emphasize how God’s grace is so much greater than any man’s sin. Grace turns an ungodly person into a Godly person. Grace transforms immoral passions. Just look at the list of things Paul cites in order to prove that GRACE IS GREATER! God’s grace, #1 brings salvation, #2 teaches people what is right and wrong, #3 informs people how to live a well-balanced life, and #4 provides hope for heaven.

Grace is far greater than anything you can do for yourself. Before trying to improve yourself, try grace. Before trying to live out your New Year’s resolutions, try grace. Before trying to turn over a new leaf, try grace. Before turning to a substance in order to squelch your pain, and misery, try grace. Everyone needs God’s grace because everyone needs forgiveness. Everyone needs forgiveness because everyone is a sinner. [Romans 3;23; 6;23]. Grace will do for you what you cannot do for yourself. God’s grace will do for you what no one else can do for you.

That is why Julia Harriet Johnston penned the words in the hymn entitled, “Marvelous Grace.”
“Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within,
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin”.

GRACE IS GREATER than any amount of education, or financial assistance. People go to school to learn, graduate, get a successful job, earn money, and buy things, but fail miserably at living. They wonder if there is any way out. Some consider extreme measures such as suicide. GRACE IS GREATER, better, and wiser. God’s grace is the best school to attend. It will educate, and assist you in life as no one else can. Through God’s grace people receive supernatural hope, and help.

Grace changes you like nothing else can. Sir Edwin Landseer was a famous artist in the Victorian period. While visiting a family, a servant spilled something which left a large stain on a wall. The host family went out, and Landseer transformed the stain into a beautiful charcoal drawing of a waterfall, trees, and animals. When the family returned home, they were awestruck with the stain having been transformed into a picture of beauty. That is how God’s grace works. God transforms your stains, sin, failures, handicaps, and weaknesses into Godliness.

SOMETHING TO DO

Contemplate these sobering questions?

Where would you be right now if it had not been for God’s grace?
#1. What would you be doing?
#2. Where would you be living?
#3. Would you be alive, or dead, or committed to an institution?

Tell someone today a part of your story as to how God’s GRACE IS GREATER!

SOUL TIME PRAYER

If it was not for Your grace Heavenly Father, I would probably be a disaster, if not 6 feet under. Thank You for Your grace that is greater than all my sin – my bad judgments, and decisions, my selfishness, my anger, bitterness, and hate….Thank You that through Your Son, Jesus Christ, I have been forgiven and given a fresh start, along with Your power within me to live a Godly life. AMEN.
